Skill Sheets

A Free Resource from WriteGuide.com

The purpose of WriteGuide.com’s Skill Sheets is two-fold: to give students a set of exercises which will serve to permanently eliminate specific writing errors from a student’s style of writing, and also to give students, parents, and teachers a thorough explanation as to why certain sentence errors actually occur in the first place.  Too often students are handed back papers slashed with red ink.  Too often parents and teachers are at a loss to explain why a certain sentence must be reworded or otherwise edited.  Skill Sheets will do much to help remedy the situation.

Skill Sheets deal with the finer aspects of sentence structure.  They deal with things that many people find intimidating, like sentence structure and punctuation.  But they make those things accessible.  In fact, they make them downright manageable.

The five lessons and accompanying exercises in each Skill Sheet are designed to be used in several different ways.  First and foremost, they are intended to be used by a teacher and student working together.  The belief that a student should be presented with a lesson and then asked to complete exercises by himself is by no means a sound method of teaching.  Students benefit immeasurably when they are able to work through lessons and exercises with the help of a teacher – who, ideally, also happens to be the student’s parent.  By working closely with the student, the teacher can be certain that the student is thoroughly understanding the lesson.

Another important aid in getting the most out of the Skill Sheets is to allow the student to consult the solutions as he or she is working through the exercises.  This is especially helpful when a certain exercise proves problematic.  By consulting the solution before moving on to the next exercise, the student will be better able to work out the next exercise on his or her own.

Otherwise, the lessons are self-explanatory.  Each is comprised of in-depth explanations written in an easy-to-understand manner, with plenty of examples.  The lessons may be used as a short unit on proper sentence structure, or as a supplement for students who need have trouble with certain errors.

The following five Skill Sheets are available.
